Menopause Guide

  • Menopause is not a 'disease' - it is a healthy, natural part of your life just like puberty.
  • The menopause has started if you have not had a period for 12 months.
  • You should monitor your menopause symptoms and consult with your GP if you are concerned about any changes.
  • Every woman's menopause is different and unique - there is no set pattern in how things will start to change, which menopausal symptoms you have and how long they will last.
  • Your menopause may be similar to your mother's, although that is not always the case.
  • The menopause can range from being symptom free, to an extremely challenging time and can continue for many years.
  • Symptoms happen because your female hormones are changing, particularly the reduction in oestrogen levels.
  • A hormone is a messenger produced by one part of your body which tells another part of your body what to do.
  • Peri-menopause is the time up to the menopause, during which your periods may become irregular and menopausal symptoms begin (mood swings and hot flushes) - this may last from a few weeks to years.
  • The average age for menopause is 51 years; before 45 years it is called 'early menopause' and before 40 years a 'premature menopause'.
  • Late menopause can occur, although usually by the age of 54 years 80% of women have stopped their periods.
  • If your periods have stopped for more than a year and bleeding restarts, you should consult your GP.
  • The menopause won't make you fat although as we age we need to eat less and exercise more to maintain our shape!
  • The menopause is likely to change your natural body shape, increasing your waist and hips.
  • HRT is effective in reducing many symptoms but it should always be taken in the lowest possible dose, and for the shortest time to reduce the risk of any side-effects.
  • 'Foggy' thinking, word blindness and a low mood may be some of your symptoms. This is normal and there are many natural products and techniques you can use to help yourself .
  • Your sex drive may dip and intimacy may be painful. By talking to your partner you can find the solutions that work for you.
  • You will not lose your femininity or attractiveness after the menopause - women develop a special appeal based on confidence and wisdom.
